Stephen Kevin "Steve" Clifford was born at Roscommon, Ireland, in 1915 and migrated to Australia with his family as a boy. Raised on the family farm in Gippsland, Victoria, he enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force on 17 November 1939. During five years of military service he served in the Middle East, including the Greek campaign as an infantryman, and was discharged in June 1944 with the rank of Sergeant while serving with the Australian Canteen Service. After the war he married Dora, a Tasmanian, whom he met while working in Hobart.
Steve and Dora settled on Lot 4 in early 1956. Owing to Steve's poor health, they transferred in the mid-1960s to a smaller dairy farm at Montagu Swamp. Their property was subsequently allocated to Jack and Marie Barnewall.
