Maxwell Douglas “Max” Mason was born in Hobart and served in the Royal Australian Navy aboard HMAS Sydney and HMAS Warrnambool. During his service he contracted tuberculosis and spent six months in Hobart’s Repatriation Hospital before being medically discharged. Unable to return to dairy farming in north-west Tasmania, Max applied for a block through the War Service Land Settlement Scheme. He, Joan and family arrived on Flinders Island in 1966. They lived at Butter Factory House before taking possession of Lot 76. He successfully farmed the property for around 30 years before retiring.
